Digital Multimeter

By: Dave Hemmings

Meters have been in use for the longest time. In the past, meters were used to check battery charges and dwell angles. Initially, multimeters were not very popular in mechanical field. A mechanic could have stayed for days without thinking about his multimeter but today, everything has changed and no mechanic can perform his duties right without using his multimeter. A quality multimeter is a great tool that a mechanic must never lack in his toolbox. You can now diagnose any kind of electronic or electrical problem with less strain by using your digital multimeter. There are two major types of multimeters, that is, analog and digital multimeters. The difference between the two can be found in their displays. Analogue multimeter uses the needle while digital multimeter uses an LCD display. Due to the technological advancement in today's vehicles, a digital multimeter becomes very important although the analogue ones still have their special uses.

A digital multimeter has a variety of functions that are built into it. The functions mostly vary with the type of digital multimeter you are using. Since there are different brands of multimeters in the market today, there then lies a couple of distinct functions that can be performed using each of them. However, it is important for us to look at the most common functions that all these digital multimeters can perform. The most important thing you must consider before you handle your digital multimeter is to read the instructions and other requirements about the multimeter before you start using it. That way, you will be protecting yourself and the equipment. All digital multimeters can be used to check current, voltage and resistance. These are some of the most important functions that a digital multimeter will help you with when diagnosing a problem.

When you are purchasing a digital multimeter, make sure that you check its impedance because it is the greatest determinant of how well your digital multimeter will be able to resist when in operation. These digital multimeters have a very high operating resistance and that affects the current flow in the circuit. The high resistance found in a digital multimeter is a major concern to mechanics and other electrical technicians because it can usually lead to the damage of the electronic gadget being tested. It is also capable of changing the gadget's sensor signal or even alter all the readings. The best digital multimeter to use is one that has about 10 megohms. This makes the multimeter's current slow or even invisible and that way, you reduce the alterations.

The best way to use your digital multimeter is to first get certain of the function you want to use it for. If you are using it to check voltage, you should then ensure that you select the appropriate range. However, selecting the right range shouldn't be a major bother because most of the digital multimeters have an automatic range selector. It is always important to check from the documentation provided by the multimeter manufacturer to see the different ranges that your digital multimeter offers. Once you understand the different aspects of your digital multimeter, you will have an easy time using it.
